WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE CLIENT/SURROGATE RELATIONSHIP DURING THERAPY
The client/surrogate relationship is a time-limited relationship that
will exist during professional appointments only.
The surrogate meets his/her own needs for social, emotional, and
sexual involvement in his/her personal relationships. In the professional
relationship, the surrogate uses his/her training in social and sexual
skills to help you re-orient the basis of your sexuality, so that you can
have more satisfying sexual/social relationships with partners of your
choosing in your own personal life.
The program of therapy with a surrogate is always under the direction
of a supervising therapist.
The surrogate may not be your ideal in terms of age, figure, looks,
dress or personality. You do not have to feel attracted to the surrogate
as you would a date in order to benefit from the therapy. You will find
that a rapport will develop through which you can learn to experience
yourself in an intimate, warm and caring relationship.
It may seem that what you consider to be your urgent sexual needs are
not getting sufficient attention. Be patient. Performance anxiety is often
at the root of impaired sexual/social functioning. It takes time to
re-orient the body and the mind, and immediate gratification often impedes
your progress.
Sexual involvement with the surrogate is not intended to meet immediate
sexual needs, but is for the purpose of helping you find out more about
yourself as a unique sexual being. You will be gaining sexual information
experientially, and you will be learning to achieve improved sexual
functioning within your value system and your life style.
The program of therapy is a series of steps intended to help improve
both your social and sexual skills. You will be learning how to select
partners who are likely to be compatible with your needs and goals.
Nothing is expected of you except that you be receptive to the steps
in the program. Ask any questions you have, at any time. We want you to
share your expectations and feelings. It's your therapy, designed to help
you. You are encouraged to be open with your therapist about your progress
with the surrogate.
Home assignments are often given. Your willingness to complete the
exercises and/or readings will have a noticeable positive effect on your
progress in therapy.
Cancellation Policy: There is a 24-hour cancellation policy at
the center. This means that (1.) if you fail to call and cancel an appointment
at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled time, we will charge you for the
missed session, and (2.) if we must cancel an appointment without giving
you 24 hours notice, your next session will be free.
By working and sharing together, we can make progress toward the
goals which you have set for yourself.
